When Marks and Spencer announced that they had commissioned lesbian Sex and the City stylist Patricia Field to create a 35-piece collection to be sold in-store, some questioned whether this unusual relationship would work. But the range was showcased last night as part of New York’s fashion week, to great acclaim.
Field’s quirky signature style was evident during the show, which paraded Carrie Bradshaw-inspired creations alongside Dynasty-chic to a disco soundtrack that had the regular drag queen crowd dancing in their seats. A black pencil skirt teamed with an over-sized blouse and a taffeta prom dress were among the more attainable items, but the collection also incorporated a sequined catsuit which may raise a few eyebrows among the middle range customers of M&S.
Field didn’t disappoint with accessories either. The ubiquitous killer heels appeared throughout the show, alongside a more risqué pair of half-sandal, half-boots, and a shoe-print bag which gave a nod to the Sex and the City fetish for Manolos.
Previous celebrity fashion collaborations have proved to be lucrative for Topshop and H&M, among others, and shareholders must be hoping the new partnership will bolster falling profits for the high-street stalwart.
Kate Bostock, M&S’s executive director of clothing, said: “Initially I was a bit sceptical because her look is quite extreme, but our customers love Sex and the City, and I know how passionate they are about the kind of designs that Patricia has done. It all came together really well, and we knew we were on to a winner.”
The new collection will be available in M&S stores, in sizes 8-20, from October 16.
