Gay man fighting for life after homophobic attack in Liverpool

A gay man suffered life-threatening head injuries last night in what police described as a homophobic attack by up to 13 people.
 
The 22-year-old, reportedly an off-duty special constable, was attacked while out with friends in Stanley Street, in Liverpool's gay district. Three youths, two aged 15 and another aged 14 have been arrested in connection with the incident.
 
A Merseyside police spokeswoman told the Liverpool Echo: "We were called to reports of of a serious assault on Stanley Street at 10pm last night. The victim was taken to hospital with serious head injuries. He has suffered multiple fractures to his skull, a fractured cheek bone and a fractured eye socket.
 
"We are treating the incident as a homophobic attack. We believe from witnesses there may have been up to 13 people involved in the attack aged 15-18. Three youths from Kirkdale have been arrested on suspicion of assault in connection with the incident. There are two aged 15 and a 14 year-old. The road will remain closed until the forensic teams have completed their investigations."
