Homotopia

Liverpool's gay arts festival Homotopia opens on Sunday

From November 1, Homotopia, Liverpool's annual LGBT arts festival, will present a month of theatre, film, comedy, literature, performance and debate.

The fine art highlights of the festival include the premiere of American artist Laurie Lipton's latest work Extraordinary Drawings and a showcasing of the work of French digital artist Chris Von Steiner, who has participated in group shows alongside Banksy, Tracey Emin, Blek le Rat and Sam Taylor Wood.

In theatre, Homotopia co-commissioned a new play about the life and lonely death of Carry On star Charles Hawtrey, Jiggery Pokery, and it will receive its world premiere from November 11 - 14, while Caretakers, a new play from Billy Cowan, tackles the issue of anti-gay bullying in schools.

The biggest draw for literature lovers will probably be Sarah Waters, who will be in discussion against a backdrop of clips from the TV adaptations of her novels, but there will also be the award-winning authors Charlotte Mendelson and Joanna Briscoe to meet their readers and discuss their work.

In the documentary strand, there will be a screening of Project Triangle, about Homotopia's project bringing together partners across Liverpool to empower young LGBT people and challenge homophobia, and other exclusives include Memories of Yankel, a short film interviewing Liverpool artist Yankel Feather, and The Invisible Death of Michael, which examines the media coverage of the death of Michael Causer.

The lighter side of the festival includes comedy from Clare Summerskill's new show In No Particular Order and stand-ups from Rosie Wilby and locals Jane Townend and Emma Bowley.
