Polish footballer sacked for writing of his hatred of 'gays'
Polish goalkeeper Arkadiusz 'Arek' Onyszko has been sacked by Danish Super League club FC Midtjylland following the publication of his autobiography in which he detailed his hatred of homosexuality.
In F**king Polack, launched yesterday, Onyszko wrote: "I hate gays. I really do. I think it's f**king disgusting to hear them talk to each other as if they are girls. I can't be in the same room as someone who's gay. See them kissing each other - it's nauseating. I have never met any gays on a soccer team. It is not possible."
FC Midtjylland signed 35-year-old Onyszko a week after another Danish club, Odense OB, fired him following his conviction and three-month prison sentence for assaulting his ex-wife.
In a recent interview to publicise the book, in which he also likened gays to "vomit" and criticised female sports reporters, Onyszko defended his opinions, saying that as a Catholic he could not accept "those kind of people".
Jens Orgaard, FC Midtjylland's head of sport, told the English-language Copenhagen Post that the player had been asked to concentrate on his game and not on writing the book, and that as far as the club were aware he had halted the project.
He said: "We felt we did the right thing this summer when we offered Arek Onyszko a new chance after his conviction. He was punished and like everyone else needed help to get back on his feet again. But lately he has abused our trust...despite warnings, he continued to work on the book project and FCM had no knowledge of its existence until now."
There was speculation yesterday that another Danish club, BK Frem, were about to sign Onyszko, but today its chairman, Peter Hornbaek, told Denmark's Radio News: "Yesterday I did not know the man's opinions, but now I've read them quoted, and I do not want BK Frem to be associated with them. I do not think they are in accordance with the standards we want to demonstrate to our young people. Therefore we wish him luck elsewhere."
