Gay superheroes to tackle crime in Brighton

A new gay comic book about LGBT superheroes fighting crime in Brighton has gone on sale. Spandex, from the creator of The O Men, Martin Eden, features seven superpower-endowed characters depicted "in the best possible taste".

The team, led by Liberty, "the world's first superhero transvestite", includes the super-strong Mr Muscles, Diva, "a lesbian Wonder Woman", Butch, aka Joanie Jones, who has unbreakable skin, Glitter, who has light-based powers, Indigo, who is French and can teleport, and Prowler, who "has the power to absorb the abilities and skills of any gay person".

Their foes will include Muscle Mary and Pussy and the Pink Ninjas, but in the first series they will defend Brighton's seafront from the 'Attack of the 50-foot Lesbian'.

Eden said: "Gay people in comics are fairly under-represented, but this new comic aims to address that. Spandex introduces a whole bunch of fabulous new characters who are set to take the comic world by storm. It's a fun, experimental comic, full of drama, comedy, romance and action...all done in the best possible taste."

The first 120-page graphic novel will be released next year, but Spandex Shorts, a miniseries introducing each character, is available now.
