University College London cancels talk by homophobic Islamist preacher

The student union of University College London has cancelled a planned talk by Abu Usamah, the Islamist preacher who has advocated the killing of homosexuals.

The Imam was scheduled to address the Islamic Society at UCL on November 30, but in a statement the university said: "UCLU has decided to cancel this event due to concerns that the health and safety criteria cannot be met."

In Channel 4's Undercover Mosque documentary, the Birmingham-based Usamah was recorded saying: "Do you practise homosexuality with men? Take that homosexual man...and throw him off the mountain...If I was to turn around and I was to call homosexuals perverted, dirty, filthy dogs that should be murdered, that's my freedom of speech isn't it?"

The cancellation follows Usamah's talk at City University for their Islamic Society's charity fundraising event on November 4. Although his speech was described as "moderate", the decision to allow him to appear was condemned by the university's LGBT society in the student newspaper The Inquirer, and gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell called on vice-chancellor Julius Weinberg to resign, saying he had "ignored" student complaints about the Iman's on-campus appearance.
