Brighton gay village may become official

Brighton's gay village could become officially recognised.

The area around Saint James’s Street in the Kemp Town area of Brighton has been known for its abundance of gay bars and gay businesses for over twenty years now.

Councillors are hoping that giving Brighton's gay village official recognition would make it as famous - and as profitable – as other similar gay areas such as Manchester and San Francisco.

The change, which would be part of an amendment to the planning strategy to 2023 of Brighton and Hove Council, was proposed by Liberal Democrat councillor Paul Elgood.

He said: What we are talking about is the Council policy finally catching up with reality.

“We all know the area as the gay village. It is time the Council did too.

“Up until now development to the area has taken place outside any planning policies.

“It will help continue to see this area grow and attract new businesses and opportunities.”

Councillor Amy Kennedy of the Green Party agreed:

“This idea will without a doubt be good for the area,” she said. “A similar area in Manchester has thrived after it was granted similar designation.”

A decision on the amendment will be made on Thursday 13 December.
