'Dumbest' Baldwin brother condemns gay marriage
American actor and born-again Christian Stephen Baldwin has said his faith doesn't allow him to support same-sex marriage and that he respected gay men who "turn away from that lifestyle".
Interviewed by the Observer's Miranda Sawyer, who described him as 'the youngest, and some say, dumbest of the Baldwin brothers', he said: "I believe that the family unit has fundamentally been the most positive thing for society and I don't believe that any minority has the right to create changes that impact on the majority."
Baldwin, 43, spoke following his eviction from Celebrity Big Brother on Friday and the night after he co-presented his religious radio programme, Baldwin/McCullough Xtreme Radio, which goes out live every Saturday evening to 195 stations across the US.
While his brothers Alec and William are outspoken supporters of gay rights, Stephen, asked what he'd do if one of his daughters came out as a lesbian, said: "I have two or three very dear friends who are homosexual and they know I'm born again and we have an understanding that we're just not going there..."
Sawyer's 'intense discussion - argument, really' with Baldwin on the subject revealed that he respected gay men who, through their faith, reject their homosexuality and get married.
"To turn away from that lifestyle is astonishing," he said. 'Yes, Stephen, it is,' mused Sawyer, who, disappointed with the otherwise 'likeable' Baldwin, concluded the article with: 'Honestly, what is it about American born-again Christians that makes them so intolerant. Whatever happened to loving thy neighbour?'
