Phelps and co.ââ¬â¢s hatred looks set to hit them where it hurts

While they’re off picketing the Pope’s visit to the US next week, those folk at the Westboro Baptist Church may find they don’t have a home to come back to.
A federal judge has ordered that the building they use be taken from them in part-payment of a $5million dollar fine – damages imposed after the Phelps family and their crackpot friends picketed the funeral of two American servicemen.
The church – famous for its GodHatesFags slogan and matching website – also operates GodHatesAmerica.com. Phelps ‘n’ friends are also not very fond of Roman Catholics, Muslims and Jews and, well, anyone who’s not them, apparently.
Basically, they’ve got a bee in their bonnets over the sodomy thing.
“American crossed the line on June 26th, 2003, when the Supreme Court ruled that we must respect sodomy,” reads a statement on the church’s website. “Westboro Baptist Church believes her gospel message to be this world’s last hope.”
The fine came after Kansas and other US states changed their laws, prohibiting the picketing of funerals. If the court’s decision is upheld, then the Phelps will be made bankrupt. No doubt that’ll also be the gays’ fault.
However, there’s a loophole – only commercial premises can be seized in order to pay legal costs, and the Phelps are claiming the rather drafty anti-gay bolthole in Topeka, Kansas is their family home.
Best get the sleeping bags out.
