Gay director Todd Haynes to remake Mildred Pierce - starring Kate Winslet
'New Queer Cinema' director Todd Haynes is to remake Mildred Pierce, the 1945 classic starring Joan Crawford that became cult viewing among gay audiences for its sizzling dialogue and depiction of the tempestuous relationship of a working class woman neurotically devoted to her ungrateful, aspirational daughter.
American cable network HBO has confirmed that the five-hour adaptation of the James M Cain novel will star Kate Winslet as the Depression-era waitress accused of the murder of her second husband, a role that won Crawford her only Oscar.
Haynes, perhaps foremost among the wave of directors who came to prominence in the early 1990s by dealing openly with gay politics, culture and identity, is best known for Velvet Goldmine, which examined the blurring of gender identity pioneered by the British glam rock movement and Far from Heaven, his take on the subtext of repressed emotion and sexuality in the Hollywood films of the 1950s.
