Alison Goldfrapp: Not a 'midlife lesbian' but 'swings wherever'
Singer Alison Goldfrapp has reacted to a newspaper article which identified her as a "midlife lesbian", saying she doesn't like to be defined by her sexuality.
Interviewed in The Times today, the Goldfrapp performer said the Sunday newspaper feature in December revealing her relationship with film editor Lisa Gunning was "naughty" and "a bit of a shocker" because no one had been consulted in advance.
She said: "A friend texted me: 'Oh, there's a really nice picture of you and Lisa in this magazine.' I was like: 'What picture? Where? Really? Hold on a minute...'"
Goldfrapp added: "I don't know why people would find it surprising. Everything we've ever done - the music, the looks, the shows - has all been quite ambiguous and undefinable, and that's how I am.
"I don't like to be defined by my sexuality, which swings wherever I swing. I've had lovely, long relationships with men as well. I just happen to be in a relationship with a lady at the moment."
Goldfrapp, who said she was "a stroppy bitch" at her first meeting with musical collaborator Will Gregory, added that she was pleased that a nice picture of her accompanied the Sunday newspaper article.
"That's what I was more concerned about. I'm glad I wasn't wearing my dungarees and Doc Martens that day..."
