Desperate Housewives to get its first lesbian relationship

The latest series of hit US comedy drama Desperate Housewives will include the show's first lesbian relationship.

High-strung Katherine Mayfair, played by Dana Delany, will be seduced by her new housemate, ex-stripper Robin Gallagher, after telling her she is taking a hiatus from men.

Viewers have already seen Robin kiss Katherine, in a scene in a bar where she does it to reject the attention she is receiving from men.

Robin subsequently reveals that she is a lesbian and suggests that Katherine should date women instead, which at first Katherine rejects, saying it isn't for her.

However, Katherine begins to find herself attracted to Robin, and despite her therapist telling her she is too fragile to embark on a relationship, ends up confessing to Robin that she has feelings for her.

Their affair follows a dream sequence in which Katherine imagines undressing Robin, played by Julie Benz, who said the subsequent love scene was "really beautiful and was so fun to shoot" and that "Dana's a great kisser".

She added: "The girls are all so fun to work with and have welcomed me with open arms. I'm so thrilled that there is such a buzz about my character's relationship with Dana's."

Desperate Housewives has already included a number of male gay characters and it was revealed last month that John Barrowman will play Wisteria Lane's main villain in a number of future episodes.

The sexuality of his character has not been revealed by the show's producers, although Barrowman said: "I've been told by Marc [Cherry, creator of the show] that I will affect every one of the women in some way."
