Anti-gay group says killer whale should be stoned to death
An anti-gay religious group has called for a killer whale that drowned its trainer to be stoned to death.
The orca, named Tilikum, jumped and grabbed 40-year-old Dawn Brancheau by the waist from a poolside platform before dragging her underwater at SeaWorld in Orlando, Florida last week.
According to the American Family Association (AFA), the Bible decrees that Tilikum should have been put to death following its killing of a female trainer in Canada in 1991 and before its involvement in the death of a man at SeaWorld in 1999.
The AFA's Bryan Fischer wrote on the organisation's website: "What about the term 'killer whale' do SeaWorld officials not understand?
"If the counsel of the Judeo-Christian tradition had been followed, Tilikum would have been put out of everyone's misery back in 1991 and would not have had the opportunity to claim two more human lives."
Fischer cited passages from Exodus, which counsel that if a man's ox kills someone, it should be stoned to death, and that if it is not killed and goes on to kill again, both it and the owner should be stoned to death.
He wrote: "The Scripture soberly warns, if one of your animals kills a second time because you didn't kill it after it claimed its first human victim, this time you die right along with your animal."
The fate of Tilikum is currently being considered by SeaWorld, which has been targeted by animal rights group Peta's campaign against "confining wild, ocean-going mammals to an area that, to them, is the size of a bathtub".
The AFA has said that homosexuality is "repulsive", "sinful" and "unnatural" and has called for bans on gay marriage and adoption by gay couples. It is in favour of the death penalty but against abortion.
