Gay news: She will be only the second out gay bishop

Canon Mary Glasspool
US Episcopal church confirms first lesbian bishop
The US Episcopal church has confirmed that a lesbian will become an assistant bishop in the diocese of Los Angeles.
Canon Mary Glasspool, 56, was elected in December, but during the 120-day process of consent the church had come under intense pressure from the Archbishop of Canterbury and other Anglican leaders opposed to a second openly gay candidate following V. Gene Robinson's consecration in 2003 as Bishop of New Hampshire.
As a result of that appointment, dozens of traditionalist churches and four dioceses broke away, prompting Episcopalian church leaders to vow to exercise restraint before consecrating any more gay bishops.
That policy was overturned at their annual national convention in July, when they voted overwhelmingly to open "any ordained ministry" to gays and lesbians and also to consider rites of blessing for same-sex couples.
Canon Glasspool, who has been ordained for twenty-eight years, having served congregations in Maryland, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania, will be consecrated on 15 May.
She said in a statement: "I am ... aware that not everyone rejoices in this election and consent, and will work, pray and continue to extend my own hands and heart to bridge those gaps, and strengthen the bonds of affection among all people, in the name of Jesus Christ."
She has been with her partner Becki Sanderson for more than twenty years.
