Gay pride: Despite an LGBT population of 40,000, Bristol has been one of the few large cities without one

Bristol's gay population is 40,000

Bristol to stage its first Pride festival this summer

Bristol will stage its first Pride festival this summer.

Despite the city's considerable LGBT population, estimated to number around 40,000, a Pride festival in 2007 had to cancelled due to a lack of funds.

Pride Bristol 2010 is scheduled to begin on August 14 and will include a film festival, club nights, talks, shows and community events.

The highlight will be Pride Day on Saturday, August 21, when a large free festival will be held in Castle Park in the heart of the city.

Pride director Dr Anna Rutherford told the Bristol Evening Post: "Bristol is a vibrant and wonderful city, with a real appreciation of diversity.

"However, despite its large LGBT population, Bristol has to date been one of the few large cities to lack a Pride festival.

"This year, a professional and passionate team have become the beating heart of Pride Bristol. Together we are working around the clock to develop a Pride to be proud of, for 2010 and years to come. Pride is for everyone and benefits cities both socially and financially."

The event is being organised by a team of LGBT business people with support from Bristol city council and Avon and Somerset police.
