Street's lesbian storyline praised by Lesbian and Gay Foundation
Coronation Street’s forthcoming gay storyline has been praised by the Lesbian and Gay Foundation.
On Sunday, Street character Sophie Webster (played by Brooke Vincent) will share a kiss with her best friend Sian (Sacha Parkinson).
It is a storyline which has been brewing for some months now and will see the two teenagers embark on a lesbian affair, the first in the fifty year history of the top-rated soap.
On the Lesbian and Gay Foundation’s website, LGF member Joanne Dunning has declared herself to be “over the moon” about the storyline.
“The storyline will be particularly powerful among teenagers who are questioning their sexuality,” she writes. “A quarter of LGF Helpline calls are about issues related to coming out.
“It’s easy to feel isolated and like you're the only one having these feelings, so seeing someone your age working through the same thoughts and fears as you on TV, could resonate strongly will young lesbian, gay and bisexual people.”
While hoping for a happy ending, Dunning remarks that “generally TV lesbianism ends in madness (Zoe Tate, Emmerdale), murder (Lydia, Hollyoaks) and even Skins made us wait to the bitter end before Naomi and Emily resolved their differences.”
Coronation Street’s lesbian kiss will air on Sunday 11 April at 7.30pm on ITV1
