Batwoman to be first gay superhero to get her own comic

Batwoman – aka wealthy socialite Kate Kane – has been recently starring in Detective Comics, taking over the role of caped crusader from Batman.

The comic will debut in July this year, and will make Batwoman the first openly gay superhero to have her own regular title.

Dan Didio, Executive Editor at DC Comics which will publish the magazine, told the New York Daily News:

“I’d like to think of it as not a big step but really something that’s well deserved.

"We had some negativity at the early stages when we first introduced her, but people have really embraced the character over the past three years."

The Batwoman character was originally introduced in 1956, to serve as a love interest for Batman, and to counter claims that Batman and his sidekick Robin were gay.

The character was dropped in the early sixties but in 2006 was reintroduced as a lesbian crimefighter to critical acclaim, with the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) praising DC Comics for its diversity policies.
