Bolivian president: Men who eat chicken will turn gay
Bolivia's President Evo Morales has told a global climate change summit that men who eat chicken will turn gay.
At the opening of the summit, held near the Andean city of Cochabamba, he claimed that the presence of homosexual men around the world is a consequence of modern food production methods.
According to SperoNews, there was laughter from the audience when he said: "The chicken that we eat is chock-full of feminine hormones, so when men eat these chickens, they deviate from themselves as men."
AFP reports that Spain's National Federation of Lesbians, Gays, Transsexuals and Bisexuals sent a protest letter to the Bolivian embassy in Madrid, in which it described Morales's remarks as "homophobic".
The president of the Homosexual Community of Argentina, Cesar Cigliutti, ridiculed Morales's claim online.
"It's an absurdity to think that eating hormone-containing chicken can change the sexual orientation of a person," he said.
"By following that reasoning, if we put male hormones in a chicken and we make a homosexual eat it, he will transform into a heterosexual."
Morales also claimed that the Western diet had caused widespread baldness in Europe.
He said: "Baldness, which seems normal, is a disease in Europe. Almost all of them are bald, and that is because of the things they eat. Among the indigenous peoples there are no bald people, because we eat other things."
