Matt Smith, the current Doctor Who, is to take on the role of gay writer Christopher Isherwood in a new BBC drama.
By: Nigel Robinson

Matt Smith and Christopher Isherwood

Matt Smith to regenerate into Christopher Isherwood.

Christopher and his Kind, based on the book of the same name, will cover ten years in the author’s life, from 1929 when he left England for Berlin in search of sexual freedom, to 1939 when he moved permanently to America.

In the book, originally published in 1976, Isherwood paints a frank and no-holds-barred picture of the gay scene in the Berlin of the 1930s. He also tells how he tried to save his boyfriend, Heinz, from the Nazis.

Isherwood also wrote about his experiences in Berlin in his two books Goodbye to Berlin and Mr Norris Changes Trains, which provided the inspiration for the Broadway musical Cabaret which was later turned into a film with Liza Minnelli.

The adaptation has been written by Kevin Elyot who wrote My Night with Reg.

Christopher and his Kind starring Matt Smith will air on BBC Two in the autumn.
