Argentine deputies approve same-sex marriage
The Argentine House of Deputies has approved same-sex marriage.
The measure was approved by 125 votes for to 109 against and the proposed legislation will now be sent to the Senate for approval.
If the law is passed, Argentina would become the first country in Roman Catholic dominated Latin America to allow gay marriage.
Deputy Felipe Sola, who backed the bill, said:
"Love isn't owned by heterosexuals.
!If we're all equal before the law, why do we want to give a different name to unions between same-sex couples?"
Talking about the Bill’s chances of being approved by the Upper House, Maria Rachid, president of the Argentine Federation of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transsexuals, told Reuters:
"We've talked to the heads of the political blocs (in the Senate) and the majority are in favour of this, so we think we could get a favourable vote in the Senate as well."
The Roman Catholic Church in Argentina strongly opposes the legislation, but Argentinean President Cristina Fernandez has promised not to exercise her right of veto should the law be passed.
