Breaking News: Baltic Pride march to go ahead after all
.
This is despite the Lithuanian authorities banning the event earlier this week on grounds of public security.
However the Court in Vilnius lifted the ban today (Friday 7th May).
The police will be sending up to 800 officers to take care of the security of the 350 people who are expected to take part in the march.
Traffic will be suspended along the route of the march and no sharp or potentially harmful objects – including umbrellas and “suspicious liquids” – will be allowed on the site.
Police have also been instructed to confiscate tomatoes and eggs.
Kestas Lancinskas, the Police Chief in Vilnius, the Lithuanian capital, said.
“We cannot guarantee there won’t be any mentally unstable people in the crowd.
“The risk level is high. Our job is to make sure the extent of incidents is as small as possible and the participants are not hurt.”
The overturned application to suspend the march was made by the acting Attorney General Raimondas Petrauskas and Stanislovas Buškevičius, a member of the Kaunas City Council.
In a statement Mr Buškevičius said that the march “would offend the values dear to Lithuania – decency, fidelity, fertility, human dignity” and that the state should not embrace lifestyles that go against the values of the majority of the population.”
