Friend charged with murder of gay teenager
Jack Frew died on a secluded cycle path in East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, on Thursday. It is believed his throat had been cut.
His friend Craig Roy, aged seventeen, has been charged with his murder.
Roy made no appeal in court and has been remanded in custody.
Frew, who was openly gay, was a popular student at his Duncanrig secondary school where he enjoyed amateur dramatics and music.
A statement on the school’s website reads:
“Jack was a popular senior pupil who was widely engaged in all aspects of school life, something which brought him many varied, loyal friends... Jack was a committed and conscientious young man on the brink of a bright future, with many opportunities open to him.”
TV presenters Colin McAllister and Justin Ryan also paid tribute to Jack.
"Scotland has been robbed of someone special, someone unique and someone who should still be there," they wrote online. "Our thoughts are with Jack's family and friends."
A Facebook group set up in Jack's memory has already gained over eight thousand members, and counselling is being made available to his school friends.
