Gay News: The first international Same-Sex Hand Holding (Sshh!) Week will begin on Monday 17 May.
By: Nigel Robinson

Sshh! promotes awareness of gay love

Monday sees start of Same-Sex Hand-Holding Week.

It coincides with the International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) which takes place on the same day.

Organised by A Day In Hand, the event will see same-sex couples holding hands in public, and follows a series of successful Sshh! Saturday events all over the world.

The event aims to promote acceptance and awareness of same-sex love and relationships.

“Because IDAHO falls on a Monday this year, and because of the success of our popular Same-Sex Hand-Holding Saturdays, we have decided to create a Same-Sex Hand-Holding Week starting on the International Day Against Homophobia May 17th,” organiser David Watkins said.

The event has the support of a host of celebrities including Liza Minnelli, Stephen Fry, Boy George, London Mayor Boris Johnson, gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell and out gay rugby player Gareth Thomas.

“Being out and visible is so important for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans people,” says Thomas, “because it allows our existence to be acknowledged in communities throughout the world…

“I find the sight of lesbian and gay couples holding hands affirming and inspiring and I hope more couples can hold hands in public and lead the way in this silent revolution. "

Watkins continues:

“Same-sex hand holding (Sshh!) is a silent revolution for LGBT people, because nothing needs to be said: no bold speeches, no reactive arguments, no war of words.

“Each LGBT person has the power to change the hearts and minds of people in their local community quietly, subtly, by simply holding hands publicly and owning their space.”

A Day In Hand’s Same-Sex Hand-Holding Week begins Monday 17 March all over the world.
