Riot police broke up Slavic Pride

A round up of the weekend's Prides

The UK’s Pride season got off to its traditional start with Blackpool Pride at the weekend.

Thousands marched along the world-famous Golden Mile and into the gay village around Swainston Street, to be entertained by the likes of Kelly Wilde, Carol Jiani and eighties chart sensation Tight Fit.

Over in Brussels, thirty-five thousand people marched through the historic streets of the Belgian capital in a demand for an end to anti-gay discrimination in Europe.

However in Minsk, the capital of Belarus, riot police broke up a gay rally which had been banned by the authorities.

Police arrested dozens of participants, beating and throwing some of them down to the ground.

Byelorussian gay rights leader Sergey Androsenko was also arrested. He said that the government's attitude towards gays amounted to state-sanctioned homophobia.
