EastEnders actor gets abuse for gay role.

 

Elliot who won the Best Newcomer Award at the British Soap Awards plays the part of Syed Masood, a Muslim coming to terms with his homosexuality and who embarks on a gay affair with Christian, played by John Partridge.
 
He said that the role left him open to homophobic abuse on the street.
 
"Since playing Syed I have really got it in the neck when I'm out,”  the Sun reports him saying. 
 
“A lot of people are supportive but there is still a huge amount of negativity.
 
“I haven't been threatened but there's a lot of cat-calling in the street. Any insult, I've had it thrown at me.”
 
He went on to say how important the part of the gay Syed was on EastEnders.  
 
"In so many cultures being gay is still something swept under the carpet,” he said.
 
The British Soap Awards are on ITV1 tonight 19 May at 7.30pm.
