Gay rights activists arrested in Zimbabwe
The two men, Ellen Chadehama and Ingatius Mhambi, are employees of the Gay and Lesbians of Zimbabwe (GALZ), a gay and HIV/AIDS awareness group
They were arrested after a letter addressed to them from former San Francisco mayor Willie Lewis Brown criticising President Mugabe’s opposition to homosexuality was found pinned on their office wall.
The pair were arrested on Friday (21 May). As today (Tuesday 25 May) is a bank holiday in Zimbabwe the two men will remain in jail until Wednesday.
Police stated that the displayed letter “undermined the authority of the President”, and have not allowed the men’s lawyer access to them.
Homosexual acts are illegal in Zimbabwe, and President Mugabe considers homosexuality as “un-African” and has described gays as “worse than dogs or pigs”.
