Gay News: Two women have become the first lesbians to marry in Portugal.
By: Nigel Robinson

Portugal is the sixth European country to allow gay marriage

Portugal’s first same-sex marriage takes place

Teresa Pires and Helena Paixao were married in a fifteen-minute ceremony in a Lisbon registry office.

They had tried to tie the knot once before in 2006, but had been refused on the grounds that marriage could only be between a man and a woman.

Portugal’s gay marriage bill was ratified despite opposition by right wing parties and the conservative President Anibal Cavaco Silva.

During a recent Papal visit to Portugal, Pope Benedict called homosexuality “dangerous” and “insidious”.

Same-sex marriage in Portugal became law on Monday 7 June. It makes this predominantly Catholic country the sixth European country to allow gay marriage.

In an interview shortly before the law came into force, Portuguese football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo came out in favour of gay marriage, saying that all Portuguese citizens should have the same rights and responsibilities as each other.
