Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga

Malawi gay couple split up

Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga, the Malawian gay couple who were sentenced to fourteen years’ hard labour and then freed following international outrage, have split up.
Steven Monjeza who faced hostility from his family for his relationship with Tiwonge Chimbalanga has now moved in with a woman called Dorothy.
He has said that he now wants to lead a “normal” life, not one where he would be “watched by everyone, booed and teased.”
Gay rights activist Peter Tatchell who supported the couple and campaigned for their release said:
"It is a tragedy that homophobic threats and abuse have forced this couple apart. They were deeply in love.
“The pressure has got to Steven. Very understandably, he wants a quiet, safe life. This would not be possible if he remained with Tiwonge. They would both be at risk of violent attack."
Tiwonge Chimbalanga told the Guardian that he believed Monjeza had found a female lover to hurt him.
"But I am not worried,” he told the newspaper.”I will also marry because there are lots of good men around. I will remain a gay."
