The 57-year-old actor, who was most recently seen as arch villain Whiplash in Iron Man 2, and was also at one time a professional boxer, reportedly contacted Thomas after he had read about the rugby league player’s coming out.

According to the Daily Mail Rourke invited Thomas to be in the audience of Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, on which the actor was appearing as a guest, and the two men later met for dinner to discuss the project.

Thomas’s manager told the Daily Mail: “The next step is for us to agree the terms of the film with Mickey's management, and then it'll be a question of getting script sorted.”

He also added: “The fact that the talent himself called him personally and showed an interest in his story, was very flattering - and very surprising too.”
Gareth Thomas came out in December 2009. He is the only current professional member of a team sport in the world who is openly gay.
