Gay comic-book cowboy returns

The Wild West gunslinger originally appeared in US comics in 1955, and was revived during the sixties to become the comic world’s biggest-selling cowboy hero.
The Kid made a controversial reappearance in 2003 in the mini-series Slap Leather, where he was controversially reimagined as a wise-crackin’, thigh-slappin’ gay man.
The reinterpretation did not go down well with either the moral majority or with gay comic book readers, who thought his character, who was always dropping sexual innuendoes and checking his good looks in a mirror, was a stereotype of a gay man.
Gay entertainment site After Elton reports that the Rawhide Kid will return in a new series, The Tombstone Blues, in which he will encounter, among others, Wyatt Earp and Annie Oakley.
Arune Singh, Marvel’s Manager of Sales Communications assured the website that the Kid would still remain gay but that the story would focus more on “the complicated history of their posse and their mission in this series.
“There will be allusions to his love life but nothing explicitly explored."
The Rawhide Kid: The Tombstone Blues by Ron Zimmerman is out this month.
