Catholic Church hit by further gay sex scandals
The right-wing weekly Panorama magazine used hidden cameras to record several Roman Catholic priests allegedly visiting gay bars and clubs and having sex.
In one video, which the magazine posted on its website, a 33-year-old French priest, called “Father Paul”, is shown attending a gay party with two semi-naked male dancers
He is later seen in a passionate embrace with another man on a bed and wearing only his boxer shorts.
The Catholic Church condemns all type of homosexual activity, and in 2008 Pope Benedict barred trainees with “deep-seated homosexual tendencies” from entering the priesthood.
According to “Father Carlos”, a source for the magazine, 98 per cent of all priests in Rome are gay.
The diocese of Rome denied this figure, but did admit that the number of gay priests in Rome was "small, but not to be written off as isolated cases".
While accusing the magazine, which is owned by Italy’s Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi, of attempting to create a scandal and defame all priests, Rome also urged the priests to leave the priesthood.
Panorama has defended its article and said that anyone who doubts the story should be aware that the magazine holds the names and address of all the priests involved in the scandal.
