Top teen show to introduce gay character
Producers of the series, an update of 90s show Beverly Hills, 90210, have been hinting for some time that they had planned a dramatic coming out for one of the programme’s regulars.
Speculation has been rife among fans to who the character might be.
It’s now been revealed that tennis-playing heartthrob Teddy Montgomery, played by actor Trevor Donovan, will come out as gay and embark on a love affair with a fellow student.
Donovan had wanted the gay role for some time, even before the decision was made.
“I would be flattered if it were me,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “What a great chance to use your acting chops a little bit to dive into a different kind of character. That is why we do this.
“I think the most important thing for the storyline would be to address the difficulty of it and the turmoil of it for a high school senior… not in terms of the shock value of it, but of the challenge it would be to come to self-acceptance and peer acceptance.”
90210 is the latest American drama aimed at teenagers to feature homosexual characters, with hit shows like Glee and True Blood all running gay storylines
