Hague: relationship with aide "purely professional"
A spokesman for the Foreign Secretary has responded to rumours in Westminster and on the internet about the true nature of the relationship between William Hague and his 25-year-old special adviser, Chris Myers.
The statement followed claims by political blog Guido Fawkes that Hague and Myers had shared a hotel room during the general election campaign.
The blog also quoted a witness who described the pair’s body language at breakfast as “eye-opening”.
Replying to the rumours, a spokesman for the Foreign Office said:
“Any suggestion that the Foreign Secretary’s relationship with Chris Myers is anything other than a purely professional one is wholly inaccurate and unfounded.”
The denial comes shortly after justice minister Crispin Blunt revealed he was gay following reports that a Cabinet minister was due to be outed by the press.
Rumours about Hague and Myers’ relationship have been circulating Westminster for some time, after the relatively inexperienced Mr Myers was appointed a special adviser to Mr Hague, despite the Foreign Secretary already having the normal ministerial quota of two advisers.
The Foreign Office defended Mr Myers’ appointment to the £30,000 job and said that Mr Hague needed a third adviser as in addition to his duties as Foreign Secretary he is also First Secretary of State.
Mr Myers had previously worked for Mr Hague as a driver and assistant during the general election campaign.
