Gay News: The man who shared a hotel room with William Hague has resigned as the Foreign Secretary's special adviser
By: Nigel Robinson

Allegations "untrue and distressing"

William Hague's aide resigns

Christopher Myers, 25, has resigned from his £30,000 per year job, after reports in the press claimed he had shared a hotel room with William Hague during the general election campaign, and questions were asked about the precise nature of the relationship between the two men.

Following an earlier press statement  from the Foreign Office which insisted that their relationship was a purely professional one, the Foreign Secretary made a more detailed and personal statement about his private life.

In it he said that Mr Myers had resigned “as a result of the pressure on his family from the untrue and malicious allegations made about him.”

The Foreign Secretary admitted that he and Mr Myers had indeed occasionally shared twin hotel rooms, before going on to say: “Neither of us would have done so if we had thought that it in any way implied or meant something else.

“In hindsight I should have given greater consideration to what might have been made of that, but this is in itself no justification for allegations of this kind which are untrue and deeply distressing.”

He also added: “Any suggestion that his appointment was due to an improper relationship between us is utterly false, as is any suggestion I have ever been involved in a relationship with a man.”

Mr Hague also revealed that his marriage of thirteen years with his wife, Ffion, had been made all the stronger after she had suffered a series of miscarriages.

“I have made no secret of the fact that Ffion and I would love to start a family,” he said. “Sadly this has proved more difficult for us than for most couples.

“We have encountered many difficulties and suffered multiple miscarriages, and indeed are still grieving for the loss of a pregnancy this summer.

“We are aware that the stress of infertility can often strain a marriage but, in our case, thankfully, it has only brought us closer together.”
