Her “Bad Romance” video won in the Video of the Year, Best Female Video, Best Pop Video, Best Dance Video, Best Choreography and Best Editing categories.
Her video for “Telephone” with Beyoncé won the Best Collaboration award.
Wearing an Alexander McQueen dress, she was escorted onto the red carpet by four former members of the US military who had been forced to leave the service over the controversial “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.
The policy, which was declared unconstitutional on 9 September 2010, bans openly gay men and women from serving in the US military.
According to The Advocate, the four ex-servicemen and women were Katie Miller, who resigned from the army in protest at the law; Major Mike Almy, an air force officer who was discharged in 2006; David Hall, a former US Air Force staff sergeant; and Stacy Velasquez, an army sergeant first class.
Lady Gaga has long been an active supporter of gay rights, and has always acknowledged her dedicated gay fanbase’s role in her early success.
