Ray Gosling

Gay presenter given suspended sentence

14 September 2010

Gosling, 71, originally made the claims in the BBC’s Inside Out programme broadcast in February 2010.
In it he had claimed that he had smothered to death a lover who was dying of an AIDS-related illness.
In the programme Gosling said: “In hospital one hot afternoon, the doctor said, ‘There’s nothing we can do’, and he was in terrible pain.
“I said to the doctor, ‘Leave me for a bit’ and he went away.
“I picked up the pillow and smothered him until he was dead. The doctor came back and I said, ‘He’s gone.’ Nothing more was ever said.”
However, following a six-month investigation, which cost over £45,000 and 1,800 hours of police time, the police were unable to find any evidence to support Gosling’s confession.
In Nottingham Magistrates’ Court Gosling initially pleaded not guilty “in my heart and in my head” to wasting police time.
However, after a brief adjournment with his lawyer, he changed his plea and told the court, “Digby Johnson, my solicitor, tells me technically I am guilty
He went on to say: "I just want to say, very clearly and very strongly, sorry to my lover's family and for the distress I have casued them and sorry that apparently I have wasted police time."
Last month he denied allegations that he had made the confession in an attempt to gain publicity for a book he was writing, or to revive a flagging career.
Gosling was given a 90 days' suspended sentence.
