Herr Westerwelle and Michael Mronz entered into a “registered partnership” on Friday 17 September at a secret ceremony in Bonn. They have been together since 2003.

Germany does not recognise gay marriage, but since 2001’s Life Partnership Act, same-sex couples can enter into a registered partnership, which has some – but not all – of the benefits of marriage.

Neither Chancellor Angela Merkel nor any of Westerwelle’s Cabinet colleagues were at the ceremony, although the Chancellor later sent her congratulations.
