Councillor says sorry but denies homophobic remark

23 September 2010

Jim Farquharson was accused of calling Aberdeen Council leader John Stewart a “faggot” during a heated argument in Aberdeen’s Townhouse on Monday 20 September.

Mr Farquharson later denied that he had used the word but instead had called his opponent, who is gay, a “fascist” and a “fat git”.

He said he had now shook hands and apologised to Mr Stewart, and that the matter was closed.

However, Mr Stewart told the Aberdeen Press and Journal that he considered Mr Farquharson’s behaviour had fallen well below what was acceptable.

“You could break my nose and apologise,” he told the newspaper, “but I would still have a broken nose.

“Just because someone apologises for something does not make it acceptable behaviour.

“After he gave an explanation for his actions and apologised, we left on as amicable term as was likely, given the circumstances.
“I still believe that his behaviour fell well below the standards of our code of conduct.”
