Gay News: Sir Elton John has spoken out against the recent spate of homophobic attacks and gay teen suicides in America.

Sir Elton John

Elton speaks out about gay bashings

14 October 2010

His comments come after a vicious and homophobic attack on three gay men in the Bronx, and the suicide of a teenager who jumped off a bridge after a secretly recorded video of him having sex with another man was posted online.

Speaking to USA Today to promote his new album The Union, John said that he had been shocked by “hateful anonymous slurs” directed against gay men and women.

“People were saying gays should be beaten up, we’re not part of God’s universe. What kind of mentality is that?

“When I first came here [to America], it was such a loving country. It’s never been in a more horrible place. This is not the America I love.”

He went on to say: “We’ve come so far with a black president, it’s mystifying that this can still be going on. Jesus Christ taught tolerance, that’s the example we should follow.

“We’re not all the same. Thank God! It would be so boring.”
