A million to wear purple tomorrow
20 October 2010
Following the recent spate of suicides among LGBT teenagers in the USA, who took their lives due to homophobic bullying, over a million people worldwide have said they will attend a Facebook event today 20 October and wear purple in honour of them.
The colour purple represents “spirit” in the gay rainbow flag, the event’s Facebook page says and continues: “That’s exactly what we’d like all of you to have with you: spirit.
“Please know that times will get better and that you will meet people who will love and respect you for who you are, no matter what your sexuality. “
However, despite the overwhelming global support for the event, some Facebook members have also posted homophobic comments and images on the event wall.
Facebook has teamed up with the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation to combat the hate-speech on the event page.
