Union Leader: "not anti-gay"

US newspaper says no to gay announcements

25 October 2010

The Union :Leader, the largest newspaper in New Hampshire, denied that it was "anti-gay", when it refused to publish the notice of the marriage of two men.

The newspaper said that it regarded marriage as being only between a man and a woman, even though New Hampshire is one of five US states which allows same-sex marriage.

In a statement, Joseph McQuaid, the publisher of the newspaper said: "While the law sanctions gay marriage, it neither demands that churches perform them or that our First Amendment right to choose what we print be suspended."
