Gay marriage U-turn for Stonewall

Stonewall to campaign for gay marriage, after all

 28 October 2010

The gay campaigning group has been under criticism recently  for not regarding gay marriage as a campaigning priority, and claiming that civil partnerships provided same-sex couples with all the benefits of marriage.

In a statement, Stonewall said:

“Stonewall is pleased to be widening its campaigning objectives to include extending the legal form of marriage to gay people. Our policy position on this is as below:

“We seek to secure marriage for gay people as a civil vehicle on the same basis as heterosexual marriage, available in a registry office but without a mandate on religious organisations to celebrate it.

“We seek to retain civil partnerships for lesbian and gay people recognising their special and unique status.”

Stonewall’s review of its position followed its biennial supporter survey in October 2010.

Last February the organisation secured an amendment to the Equality Act which allowed the celebration of civil partnerships on religious premises.
