US troops happy to serve with gays
29 October 2010
The survey was sent to 400,000 troops and another 150,000 to family members to gauge the military’s reaction to the lifting of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” rule, where openly gay men and women are not allowed to serve in the US military.
Most respondents said they had no objections to serving alongside gay service men and women, and that the “don’t ask, don’t tell” ban should be lifted.
However, there was a minority who said that they would leave the forces if openly gay men and lesbians were allowed to serve.
The full results of the survey will be released on 1 December when the Pentagon will reveal its own plan for the repeal of the ban.
The information was passed on to NBC by military officials on condition of anonymity.
