Taiwan hosts biggest Gay Pride in Asia

Organisers said that the march was the biggest Gay Pride event in Asia, and attracted people from China, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.

Rex Shau of Taiwan LGBT Pride told news agency AFP that the turnout had been much bigger than had been expected

This was the eighth annual parade in the Taiwanese capital and had the theme of “Out and Vote”.

Mr Shau said that he hoped the Parade would focus attention on gay issues prior to mayoral elections in one month’s time in five Taiwanese cities.

“While we hoped the rally would raise awareness of gays and lesbians, the rally also aimed to vie for substantial support from the election candidates,” Mr Shau told AFP.

“Some politicians just pay lip service, never taking real steps to adopt non-discrimination measures.”

Homosexuality is legal in Taiwan. A bill to legalise same-sex marriages, and grant gay couples the right to adopt, was drafted in 2003 but has yet to be passed.
