Gay News: Thousands in the Argentinean capital have celebrated the country’s status as the first Latin American country to allow same-sex marriage

Gay marriage has been legal since July

Thousands turn out for Buenos Aires Gay Pride

8 November 2010

According to Esteban Paulo, President of the Argentinean LGBT Federation, more than five hundred same-sex couples have been married in this predominantly Roman Catholic country, since President Cristina Fernandez signed the law in July 2010
The change in law has also proved to be a money-spinner for the tourist industry with an estimated 100,000 more gay and lesbian tourists visiting Argentina since marriage legislation.
“It’s the same kind of increase that happened in South Africa, Canada and Madrid after they legalized gay marriage,” said Pablo De Luca of Buenos Aires’ Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.
“We want to travel to a country where we don’t feel like we have to hide our sexuality.”
The theme of the weekend’s Gay Pride celebration was “Let’s go for More”, and focused on the need to change the law to allow transgendered Argentineans to change their gender on official documents such as ID cards and birth certificates.
