Madonna felt like a weirdo

Madonna goes on "rampage"

10 November 2010

The singer was appearing via satellite on the Ellen DeGeneres show when the topic turned to homophobic bullying and the recent spate of suicides amongst gay teenagers in the US
.
The star said that she could relate to the idea of feeling isolated and alienated and revealed that at school she was incredibly lonely.

“I never felt like I could fit in in school,” she told DeGeneres. “I wasn’t a jock. I wasn’t an intellectual. There was no group that I felt a part of. I just felt like a weirdo.”

Praising the gay community, without whom she says she would not have had a career, she said that her gay dance teacher introduced her to a community of individuals who taught her it was “good and OK to be different “.

She told DeGeneres that she had taught her own children not to judge people who are different and that she was “incredibly disturbed and saddened” by the recent series of teen suicides in the USA because of homophobic bullying.

“The concept that we are torturing teenagers because they are gay... is unfathomable,” she said. “It’s like lynching black people or Hitler exterminating Jews.

“Sorry if I’m going on a rampage right now, but this is America, the land of the free and the home of the brave.”

She said that everyone should try to get through each day without gossiping about anyone.

“And not even listening to gossip, walking away from it,” she went on. “Can you imagine what your day would be like?”
