Muslim schools accused of homophobia and anti-Semitism
The BBC’s Panorama programme has found that about 5,000 Muslim children, aged between six and eighteen, are being taught Sharia law which states that the punishment for gay sex is death.
The schools are part of the Saudi Students’ Clubs and Schools in the UK and Ireland organisation. As the schools are weekend schools they able to operate and teach without UK official approval.
One of the school text books available to the children states that the punishment for gay sexual activity is death, either by stoning, burning with fire, or throwing off a cliff.
Another text book asks children to list the “reprehensible” qualities of the Jews, and claims that Zionists are working towards world domination for the Jewish people.
Children are also taught that a thief should be punished by having his hand chopped off for a first offence, and his foot for a second. The textbook carries detailed diagrams on how to carry out the amputations.
The Saudi government has said that it has no official ties to the schools, and that it did not endorse them.
It also added that the material had been taken out of context and referred to historical decisions.
UK Education Secretary Michael Gove told Panorama:
“Saudi Arabia is a sovereign country. I have no desire or wish to intervene in the decisions that the Saudi government makes in its own education system.”
However he did say that anti-Semitic and homophobic material would not be allowed in English schools, and added that education inspectorate Ofsted would be looking into the matter.
Panorama: British Schools, Muslim Views is shown on BBC1 at 20.30 on Monday 22 November. It will then be available in the UK on the BBC iPlayer.
