Prime Minister Raila Odinga made those statements at a rally in the Kibera district of Nairobi.
“We will not tolerate such behaviour in the country. The constitution is very clear on this issue and men and women found engaging in homosexuality will not be spared,” he said.
“Any man found engaging in sexual activities with another man should be arrested. Even women found engaging in sexual activities will be arrested.”
Odinga argued that there was “no need” for homosexuality in Kenya after a recent census showed the population of the East African country was split evenly between men and women,
He also attacked critics of the new constitution who had argued that it tolerated same-sex marriage and abortion.
“Those were lies from leaders who wanted to confuse Kenyans to reject the new law,” he said, “The constitution is very clear on that matter. It does not state anywhere that same-sex marriage is legal in Kenya.”
Homosexual relationships are illegal in Kenya and can carry a punishment of up to fourteen years’ imprisonment.
