Buenos Aires based Breno Costa and Guilherme Souza, the creators of the 2011 calendar, say that they produced the calendar with the permission of toy-makers Matchbox, who are owned by Mattel.
However Dr Stephanie Wegener, a spokeswoman for Mattel, has said that the company has nothing to do with the pictures.
“We don’t want Barbie portrayed in this way, especially with our logo,” she said. “We will be taking legal action against the creators.”
The calendar portrays Barbie in a series of nude poses, with one image showing two Barbies in an intimate position.
Costa and Souza have said the calendar was intended as a commentary on how sex is used to sell everything in society.
