Jamaican gay rights activist murdered
7 December 2010
The man, whose name is being withheld until his family can be informed, was found behind an insurance building in Kingston.
It is believed that the murder was homophobic.
A member of the Jamaica Forum for All-Sexuals and Gays (J-FLAG) confirmed that the man had attended one of their workshops where he claimed that his life had been under threat for some time.
In a statement J-FLAG condemned “the rampant breach of rights meted out to lesbian, gay, bisexual Jamaicans, who are often denied their human rights to life, privacy, respect and dignity, because of stigma, discrimination and violence.”
Homosexual acts are illegal in Jamaica and carry a punishment of up to ten years in prison.
The majority of its population opposed homosexuality, and it has been described by gay rights groups as “the most homophobic place on earth”.
